RBI using new machines for counting Banned Notes

• RBI is using sophisticated ‘Currency Verification and Processing (CVPS)’ machines for checking the numerical accuracy and genuineness of the currency notes, including SBNs (Specified Bank Notes that have been scrapped).

• These machines are way superior to the note counting machines as said by RBI officials.

• The clarification followed an RTI reply by the central bank itself wherein it had said ‘counting machines’ were “not being used” in RBI offices for the old scrapped notes.

Prominent American historian Nancy Hatch Dupree died

• American historian Nancy Hatch Dupree, who dedicated most of her life to preserving Afghanistan’s heritage, died in a Kabul hospital on Sunday aged 89.

• She had first arrived Kabul in 1962 as the wife of a diplomat.

• Over the next five decades she travelled throughout the country, wrote five guidebooks and documented the war-torn nation’s past.

Hurricane Irima

• Hurricane Irma’s eyewall slammed into the Florida(USA) Keys on Sunday, lashing the island chain with fearsome wind.

• Six million people — one third of the State’s population — have been ordered to evacuate their homes in Florida.

Sanjeev Sinha Named advisor for 1.1 Lakh crore bullet train project

• Sanjeev Sinha has been appointed as adviser for the Ahmedabad-Mumbai High Speed Rail project by Japan Railways.

• He is former Tata executive in Tokyo and the first IIT-ian from Barmer, Rajasthan.

• The ceremony for opening of project is planned in Ahmedabad on September 14 in the presence of Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and PM Narendra Modi.

Smart City Award Contest

• Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry has announced a Smart Cities Awards Contest with a total prize money of ₹50 lakh.

• This is to recognise and reward cities and innovative ideas that promote mission's goals.

• Best performers in categories like improving governance, culture and economy, transportation, among others will be awarded ₹5 lakh each and a scroll on June 25 next year.

NGT fined DTU

• The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has imposed an environment compensation of ₹25,000 on the Delhi Technological University (DTU) for not following environment laws.

• This came after the institution failed to devise a mechanism to treat the huge quantity of waste generated and install requisite anti-pollution devices.

Four Wheelers to get ‘Eco friendly service permit’ in Delhi

• The Delhi State Transport Authority has decided to grant 'eco-friendly service' permits to battery and CNG-run four wheelers.

• The order is to boost the last-mile connectivity in the city.

• Till Now, these permits are only given to three-wheeler green vehicles.

Canada deported hundreds civilians to War-torn Countries

• Canada has deported hundreds of people to countries designated too dangerous for civilians, with more than half of those people being sent back to Iraq, according to government data .

• Canada faces a record number of migrants and is on track to have the most refugee claims in more than a decade.

• Between January 2014 and Sept. 6, 2017, Canada sent 249 people to 11 countries for which the government had suspended or deferred deportations because of dangers to civilians

Lachlan Smart become youngest pilot to fly solo

• An 18-year-old Australian pilot, Lachlan Smart, has set the Guinness World Record for being the youngest person to take a solo trip around the globe in an aircraft.

• He said “"My mission is to inspire youth to dream big and to follow their dreams,"

India win 2nd SABA U-16 Cup

• India has won 2nd south Asian Basket Ball, SABA, under-16, championship.

• India remained unbeaten in its all four matches and accumulated 8 points.

• Bangladesh was first runner up, Nepal was hosting the event and was third runner up.

Nadal won US Open-2017

• World number one Rafael Nadal clinched his third US Open title on Sunday, taking his tally of Grand Slam titles to 16.

• Nadal defeated first-time Grand Slam finalist Kevin Anderson 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 to clinch the title.

• Defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman flagged off Navik Sagar Parikarma is Goa.

• A team of six women officers of Indian Navey would travel around the world on INSV Tarini.

Irdai allows OTP for opening account

• Regulator Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai) has permitted usage of OTP or one time password for opening e-insurance account (eIA) as an alternative to electronic signature.

• As part of its ongoing effort to improve insurance penetration, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai) has also permitted e-KYC facility offered by UIDAI which provides the unique Aadhaar numbers.

Vice-President laid foundation for smart City

• Foundation stone layed for the first and only greenfield smart city project, in Ranchi by Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu.

• He also laid the foundation stone for an urban civic centre, a convention centre and an urban planning and management institute.
